Abstract

The eruption of Merapi Volcano in 2010 has caused a huge impact, especially for the people who live in five (5) villages, are Kepuharjo, Umbulharjo, Glagaharjo, Wukirsari, and Argomulyo, Cangkringan District, Sleman Regency. Some of the people directly affected have been relocated to Kuwang Hamlet, Argomulyo Village, Cangkringan District. The aims of this paper is to determine the residential preferences of communities directly affected by the 2010 eruption. The method used in this research is field observation with structured interviews with 100 respondents directly affected communities spread across five (5) villages that were most severely affected. The five villages are Kepuharjo, Glagaharjo, Wukirsari, Umbulharjo and Argomulyo. The analytical tool used to determine residential preferences is factor analysis. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that there are at least six (6) main factors that represent the residence preferences of directly affected communities, namely safety from the eruption of Mount Merapi, good social relations in the community, personal attributes (age, length of stay in the area, and education), environmental comfortable housing, convenience of facilities and infrastructure and proximity to the workplace.
